            Zoo readies treats for guests, animals during Howloween

            For many families, trick-or-treating is not in the cards this year, but that doesn't mean we can't get in the Halloween spirit. During the Oregon Zoo's annual Howloween festivities, presented by The Oregonian, kids can show off their costumes and learn about wildlife in a fun and safe setting, Oct. 24-–25 and Oct. 29-–Nov. 1

            With inmates' help, rare NW butterfly is homeward bound

            Last week, the butterfly technicians at Coffee Creek transferred 723 of the growing caterpillars and 399 pupae back to the Oregon Zoo's butterfly lab. From there, the insects were transported to conservation biologists at USFWS for release on western Oregon prairies near Corvallis.

            Zoo branching out with new beaver

            "Branch manager" Filbert welcomed a new coworker this month when Maple, a 3-year-old North American beaver, joined him at the Oregon Zoo's Cascade Stream and Pond habitat.

            Naptime is over for endangered NW butterflies

            Zoo conservationists roused 1,200 Taylor's checkerspot larvae from their winter dormancy this week, transferring the very hungry caterpillars into rearing cups at the zoo's Imperiled Butterfly Conservation Lab, where they will munch on narrowleaf plantain following an eight-month snooze.
